Abstract:
The digital twin is an innovative concept that integrates physical entities with their virtual counterparts, creating real-time digital replicas of physical systems. By continuously synchronizing data between the two realms and enhancing the data with behavior modeling, digital twins enable enhanced monitoring, analysis, and optimization across various domains, such as smart cities, industrial processes, and more.
However, the successful realization of digital twins comes with several challenges. These include achieving data interoperability across diverse platforms, ensuring seamless data federation from multiple sources, orchestrating services across a complex digital ecosystem, generating robust machine learning models for accurate predictions, and maintaining high-fidelity representations of physical systems.
This seminar will explore cutting-edge technologies and applications driving digital twin development, e.g., for the realization of a city district digital twin, or for landmine risk assessment in dangerous territories. The seminar will also highlight the role of transfer learning in smart districts, and examine network digital twin use cases that enhance operational efficiency, security, and predictive maintenance.
Finally, the seminar will address the role of standardization for digital twin applications, from the initial stages of the requirements definition to recent frameworks and full-stack solutions under development in relevant standards bodies and consortia (e.g., 3GPP, IETF, ETSI and IOWN GF).
Biography:
Dr. Flavio Cirillo
Dr. Flavio Cirillo is a Senior Research Scientist of the Data Ecosystem and Standards research team at NEC Laboratories Europe, Heidelberg, Germany. His research topics include AI/ML and data platforms for the Digital Twin. He has worked on many IoT and Digital Twin related European research projects allowing him to experiment technologies in real world deployment in the domain of smart city. He works also in open source research projects part of FIWARE Foundation for Digital Twin data management and service orchestration. He is currently involved in Digital Twin standardization activities such as FIWARE, where he is responsible for the Processing and Visualization chapter of the FIWARE Technical Steering Committee, and Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN) Global Forum, where he is leader of the Data Space for Digital Twin Applications task force and of the Network Digital Twin activities.
Umberto Fattore
Umberto Fattore received both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy, in 2018. Since then, he works for NEC Laboratories Europe GmbH, first as Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) for the EU SPOTLIGHT project - focusing on 5G mobile core flow optimization, then as Researcher for the EU 5G-CARMEN project on cross-border seamless 5G connectivity. From 2021, he is Standardization Engineer in NEC, mainly involved in the recently established IOWN Global Forum and in the ETSI NFV ISG, but also following several other groups’ activities in ETSI, 3GPP, and IETF.
